Without seasonal adjustment, the number of persons in employment in September 2025 rose by 150,000 (+0.3%) on August 2025 due to the autumn upturn. The usual seasonal increase in employment was therefore considerably smaller than the average September increase for the years 2022 to 2024 (+196,000 people).

Employment figures in September 2025 slightly below level of previous year

Compared with September 2024, the number of persons in employment in September 2025 was down by 46,000 (-0.1%). The downward trend in the year-on-year labour market figures, which has been observed since May 2025, therefore continued.

Employment in 3rd quarter of 2025 down 0.1% on previous quarter after seasonal adjustment

According to provisional calculations, the number of persons in employment whose place of employment was in Germany (domestic concept) averaged roughly 46.0 million in the 3rd quarter of 2025. Following seasonal adjustment, the number of persons in employment was down by 41,000 (-0.1%) from the previous quarter. Detailed results for the 3rd quarter of 2025 will be released on 18 November 2025.

Adjusted unemployment rate rises to 3.9% in September 2025

According to results of the labour force survey, 1.84 million people were unemployed in September 2025. This was an increase of 425,000, or 30.1%, compared with September 2024. The unemployment rate rose to 4.1%, which represented a sharp increase of 0.9 percentage points on the same month of the previous year (September 2024: 3.2%).

Adjusted for seasonal and irregular effects, the number of unemployed in September 2025 stood at 1.71 million, which represented an increase of 15,000 on August (+0.9%). The adjusted unemployment rate rose to 3.9% (August 2025: 3.8%).

Methodological notes:

The differing comparative periods must be taken into account in all press releases on short-term indicators: Short-term economic monitoring focuses on seasonally adjusted comparisons with the previous month or quarter. These reflect short-term economic trends. Year-on-year comparisons, by contrast, enable long-term comparisons of levels and are largely unaffected by seasonal fluctuations.

When the number of persons in employment was first calculated for the reference month of September 2025, the provisional monthly and quarterly employment results for 2025 were recalculated as part of the regular revision of national accounting results. For this purpose, all additional sources of employment statistics that had become available by the time of calculation were taken into account. Despite minor adjustments to the absolute levels, the recalculation has not changed the year-on-year change rates published to date for the monthly employment figures.

The number of persons in employment from the employment accounts differs from that of the labour force survey, which has been integrated into the microcensus. The differences are mainly due to the different methods and procedures applied in the two statistics, although some are caused by definitions that are not completely identical. Background information on the differences in the results is available in the explanatory notes (only in german) on the statistics.

Starting with the release of the data for reference month April 2025, the Federal Statistical Office has based the extrapolation of the monthly results from the labour force survey on key population figures derived from the 2022 Census data, retrospectively from 2009 onwards. Detailed information on the microcensus and the changeover to the 2022 Census is provided on a special page (only in german) on the website of the Federal Statistical Office. The effects on labour market reports are presented on a topic page (only in german)

Persons in employment and unemployed persons are counted according to the employment status concept of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Therefore, the unemployment figures shown here differ from registered unemployment as determined and published by the Federal Employment Agency in accordance with the German Social Code. In the European Statistical System, the results of the labour force surveys are used as a standard basis for calculating unemployment rates.
